Made to Measure Curtains: Measuring Guide

The expression ‘measure twice, cut once’ is never more accurate than when measuring curtains. However it needn’t be a daunting task if you know how to do it correctly. To get the curtains the right size you will need to measure the width that you want them to be, and the length (drop). How they will look is down to your personal taste and what impression you want to set.

If you are unsure or would like more advice then please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. We would be more than happy to talk you through the options whether it be for us making the curtains for you, or if you are doing it yourself - we are always happy to share our expertise.

Tips for measuring curtains:

It is always best to fit your track or curtain pole before taking your measurements. For accuracy we advise that you use a metal measuring tape. Always double check your measurements.

Curtain Width

If you are using a track, measure the total length of the track - A. This figure is your curtain width.

If you are using a track with an overlap, measure the total length of the track – A, measure the overlap – B, then add A and B together. This figure is your curtain width.

If you are using a pole, measure the distance between the two finials (decorative ends) – C. This figure is your curtain width.

Curtain Drop

How you measure for the curtain drop depends on the style of heading you want to use. See below for how to measure for the different styles.

Decide on where you would like your curtains to finish.

  • For floor length curtains, 1.5cms longer than actual floor length is suggested or 1cm shorter.

  • For sill length curtains either 15-20cms below the sill or 1cm above it is suggested.

Take measurements in several places along the track or pole. (It is suggested that you use the longest measurement.)

MEASURING THE DROP FOR THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS:

Pencil Pleat, Cottage Pleat, Flop over Frill, Double Pinch Pleat, Triple Pinch Pleat and Goblet Pleat.

If you are using a track or a pole you need two measurements. Add the two measurements together. This figure is your curtain drop.

1. THE EYE DROP

Measure from the track eye (where your curtain hook attaches) to where you want the bottom of the curtains to finish - include any puddling in this measurement.

Measure from the track eye (where your curtain hook attaches) to where you would like the top of the curtain to finish.

  • For tracks, if track is visible we suggest a heading height above the track. If track is covered by a pelmet/similar we suggest simply cover the eyelet so the curtain sits just below the track.

  • For poles, we suggest for pinch pleats to simply cover the eyelet so the curtain sits just below the ring and for stand up ruffle headings decide how high you would like the stand up - 8cms is a good guide.

Measuring the Drop for Eyelet Headed Curtains:

These can only be fitted to a pole. You will need two measurements. Add the two measurements together. This figure is your curtain drop.

1. THE DROP

Measure from the top of the pole to where you want the bottom of the curtains to finish - include any puddling in this measurement.

Measure from the top of the pole to where you want the top of your curtains to finish. (3cms is the suggested amount).

Always double check your measurements.
